Sujet: Nous sommes à Londres, durant les dramatiques bombardements de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Sarah Miles, l'épouse d'un haut fonctionnaire britannique, s'éprend de Maurice Bendrix, un écrivain. Leur secrète liaison se déroule plus ou moins harmonieusement, à l'insu de tous, jusqu'à un dramatique week-end durant lequel Bendrix faillit perdre la vie. Depuis ce soir, Sarah a rompu toute relation avec son amant sans lui fournir d'explication.
